Addiction Counseling in Bethlehem, PA

We work with clients who have already been to rehab and have detoxed. Or with clients who abuse alcohol and/or low level drugs but have not yet nurtured a profound dependence on those substances. A true chemical dependency, however, needs detoxification before therapy will be of any use.

The society we live in grants a great deal of permission for people to use—and abuse—drugs. Social psychologists have long indicated that the number one cause of alcohol abuse—and now growingly drug abuse—is social permission. We act as if it is normal…reasonable…to use drugs, telling ourselves we’re just using them recreationally. The problem is, recreational use often turns to abuse. The user spirals out of control.
There are two major reasons why recreational users spiral out of control. One is that the users underestimate the seductive power of the drug to mood alter and overestimate their mental power to “handle it.” The second reason is the “co-morbidity” of another problem. That is, recreational users may have some significant problem and are unconsciously using the drug or alcohol to help them cope with it. The fact is, however, that non-prescription street drugs and alcohol do not really help stabilize moods. For example, alcohol is a central nervous system depressant that just depresses the user more. Nor do drugs, whether prescription or street, grant wisdom.
